The FBI is investigating the theft of $7.5M from an endowment fund managed by the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. The hack was discovered by members of the federation when suspicious activity was detected in an employee’s email account by an IT contractor. It is believed that the hackers first gained access to its systems in early summer.

The CEO reported the theft in a virtual call with employees saying the initial attack targeted an employee who was using their personal computer while working from home. Like many companies, Federation staff has been working from home since the Coronavirus outbreak, many often using personal computers, creating vulnerabilities for hackers to take advantage of.

Since the attack, its leaders have taken additional measures to make sure this does not happen again, including not allowing employees to work from their personal computers.
