Analysis indicates 14,000 newly registered cyber-squatted domains in a single month finds 55% to be malicious or potentially fraudulent.

In a report released earlier this month, Palo Alto Networks collected information on newly registered domains in December 2019, and found 13,857 domains classified by its software as cyber-squatting based on lexical analysis. Large companies that have a strong online presence such as Apple and PayPal, and banks, are being targeted and taken advantage of during the pandemic.

Cyber-squatting is the practice of registering names, especially well-known company or brand names, as internet domains, in the hopes of reselling them at a profit. The report indicates that Cyber-squatted domains resembling Apple.com, for example, led to malicious content more than 70% of the time. Click here to read more on the report.
